The Picosecond-scale Photonic Heterogeneous Integrated Neuromorphic Detector (PHINDER) is an EIC project that will enable picosecond-scale, high throughput, optical event detection and analysis by fabricating and demonstrating a dynamic photonic sensor array with on-chip neuromorphic intelligence.

The PHINDER project will enable picosecond-scale, high throughput, optical event detection and analysis by fabricating and demonstrating a dynamic photonic sensor array with on-chip neuromorphic intelligence.
This is enabled by advancing the state of the art in optoelectronic algorithm-hardware co-design and multi-scale heterogeneous integration. This will unlock a disruptive paradigm shift in high-resolution sensing and imaging, targeting a 100-fold energy efficiency enhancement, sub-nanosecond latency, and unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution. Groundbreaking chip developments will be closely aligned with applications in three diverse exemplary areas relating to 5D (energy, time, x-y-z position) imaging particle detectors, proton therapy, and adaptive chemical process control.

The codesign activities of the PHINDER project are aligned with the research program of the Machine-Learning Optimized Design of Experiments (MODE) Collaboration.
